LAPEER COMMUNITY INFO

Located in the heart of Michigan, Lapeer is a vibrant and growing community with a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. With a population of over 8,000 residents, Lapeer is a city that combines the charm of small-town living with the convenience and amenities of a larger city.

Nestled between Flint and Detroit, Lapeer is known for its central location and easy access to major highways and interstates, including I-69 and 1-75, making it an ideal place for families, commuters, and businesses. Lapeer has maintained its small-town charm, offering a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, and a tight-knit community.

In January 1820, the county of Oakland was formed, which served the area now known as Lapeer, until the County of Lapeer was formed in 1837, when Michigan became a state.

The name "Lapeer" is believed to have originated from the French word "la pierre," meaning stone. This is in reference to the stone that was found at the bottom of the south branch of the Flint River, which runs through Lapeer County. The river was frequently traveled by French and Indian traders, and it's said that they named the area after the stone they found in the river. The English pronunciation of "la pierre" is what gives us the name "Lapeer."

It is also believed that the first settlers who came from New York State may have brought the name Lapeer from a similarly named city in their home state. A third supposition is that French missionaries named the city Le Pere, meaning The Father.

One of the standout features of Lapeer is its rich history, which can be seen in its beautiful Victorian-style homes, historic downtown district, and the many museums and historical sites throughout the city. The Lapeer County Courthouse, built in 1886, is a prime example of the city's rich history, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city of Lapeer is also well-known for its  education system, with several public and private schools. The schools in Lapeer offer a strong education curriculum, sports programs, and extracurricular activities to help students reach their full potential.

In addition to its parks and recreation, Lapeer is also known for its thriving downtown area, which features a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. The downtown area is a hub of activity, with a variety of events and festivals held throughout the year, including the Lapeer Days Festival, the Lapeer Farmers Market, and the Lapeer Art Fair.

In conclusion, Lapeer, Michigan is a city with a rich history and a bright future. With its schools, beautiful parks and recreation areas, thriving downtown, and central location, Lapeer is an ideal place for families, commuters, and businesses.
